A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 20, 2013 at 10:00 am in the Sunrise Chapel at Walters Funeral Home for David Evans Guidry, Jr., who passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013, with the love and care of his family by his side. He was 90 years old, and just three days shy of his 91st birthday. Father Gary Schexnayder, pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, will officiate the mass and conduct the funeral service. Lectors will be Amy Lynn Guidry and Jobie Louanna Russell; giftbearers, Robin Ann Sonnier, Kayla Guidry, Victoria "Tori" Breaux, Tonya Guidry and Olivia Guidry. Valerie Andrus, pianist and soloist, will perform, "Wing Beneath My Wings", Ave Maria", "Amazing Grace", "Old Rugged Cross", and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Interment will follow the mass in Calvary Cemetery.
David is survived by three sons; Ronald J. Guidry (Veronica "Vee" Domingue Guidry) of Carencro, David "Pokey" Guidry, III (Kathy Tweedel Guidry), of Carencro, and Paul "P.D" Guidry of Breaux Bridge; three daughters, Sandra Faye Guidry and her companion Judith L. Goodstone of Arnaudville, Victoria "Yosh" A. Guidry Breaux of Opelousas and her companion Bryan Henry of New Iberia, and Dana "Deno" L. Guidry Aucoin (Lloyd, Jr.) of Lafayette; one adopted daughter, Dahlonaga Ann Durand Page (Jimmy Drouet) of Carencro; one stepson whom he loved like his own, Raymond Guidry (Myrna) of Oak Point, TX; one sister, Eula Mae Guidry Usie of Breaux Bridge; twenty grandchildren, Robin Ann Guidry Sonnier (Scott) of Sunset, Dan Evans Guidry of Lake Charles, Shaun A. Guidry (Kayla Domingue Guidry) of Carencro, Jerod Thibodeaux and his companion, Michelle Rouly of Lafayette, Ryan "Red" Thibodeaux of Breaux Bridge, Laura Lee Breaux Stelly (Carly) of Carencro, John Breaux of New Orleans, Robert Breaux of New Orleans, Tonya L. Guidry and her companion Michael Deshotel of Lafayette, Olivia M. Guidry of Carencro, Amy Lyn Guidry and her companion Matt Solice of Natchitoches, Leah Rae Guidry of Breaux Bridge, Casey Charles Dekerlegand of Carencro, Nicole Marie Sonnier (Doug) of Carencro, Kerry Lee Aucoin Tullos (Rob) of Plano, Kimberly Ann Aucoin of Plano TX, Gloria Aucoin Cossey (Stan) of Arkansa, Jobie Louanna Judice Russell (Anthony Russell of Eunice, Jenna Judice of Carencro and Damon Judice of Carencro; nine step-grandchildren, Steven Cobb (Linda), Lois Cobb Stephens (Jack), Debbie Cobb, Timmy Cobb (Theresa), Bryan Guidry (Cindy), Craig Guidry, Sheri Guidry Boule (Ronnie), Christopher Guidry (Amy), all from TX, and Tracey Drouet of Carencro; 28 great-grandchildren; 6 step great-grandchildren; and 2 step great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Ed Mae Maturin; his second wife, the former Carmen Bernard Guidry; his parents, the former Bertha "Bat" Webb and David Guidry, Sr.; one daughter, Linda Suzanne Guidry Thibodeaux; one son, Richard Keith Guidry; one infant son who died at birth; one sister, Ruby Guidry Maturin and her husband Ellis Maturin, Sr.; one step-daughter Dorthy Guidry Cobb; his in-laws, the former Zabia Romero and Gedon "Pop Taco" Maturin; five brothers-in-law, Gerald "Jay" Usie; Ralph Touchet; Sylvain Romero, Lloyd Maturin, and Adonis Maturin; three sisters-in-law, Zadia Maturin Touchet, Alzid Maturin Romero, and Eunice Thibodeaux Maturin; and one step great-grandson, Tommy Joe Johnston.
David was a native and resident of Lafayette for most of his life. He currently lived in Breaux Bridge. He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1942. Upon graduation he joined the United States Army and served his country honorably in World War II. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor, HI and later in Trinidad, West Indies.
As a young man, David worked with his uncle, Edward Guidry, who taught him all he could about electrical work. He also worked at Romero's Construction and Evangeline Seismograph Company for several years before joining the Lafayette Parish School Board Maintenance Department in 1969. He retired as a mechanic in 1991, after 22 years of service.
He was a member of the American Legion in Breaux Bridge, the Louisiana Sheriff Honorary Membership Program, and the Whiskey River Country Club, where he played French music for many years. He loved playing the piano and accordion, and would often play at family parties and nursing homes around Acadiana. For a time he played with Joe and the Jolly Boys.
David, along with his wife Ed Mae and their nine children, dedicated over 20 years of service to the Northside High School Backers Club. The Club presented a plaque to the entire David Guidry, Jr., family in recognition and appreciation for the many years of loyalty, devotion and service to Northside High.
David, who was also called "Nonc Tiff" and "T-Frere" also loved spending time with his family and friends, telling stories of the good old days, and caring for all his animals: his goat, Oscar the Guidry; his dog, T-Put; his mule, Festus; and all his chickens. He loved feeding all the neighborhood dogs King, Lucky Dog One, and Lucky Dog Two. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, picking and eating fresh figs and oranges right off his trees.
Pallbearers for the service will be Ronald J. Guidry, David Guidry, III, Paul D. Guidry, Lloyd S. Aucoin, Jr., Shaun A. Guidry, Ryan "Red" Thibodeaux, Casey C. Dekerlegand and Doug Sonnier. Honorary Pallbearers will be Raymond Guidry, Louis Cobb, Dan Evans Guidry, Scott Sonnier, Jerod Thibodeaux, John Breaux, Robert Breaux, Carl Stelly, Michael Deshotel, Anthony Russell and Damond Judice.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 19, 2013 from 10 am - 10 pm, and resume on Friday morning from 8 am until time of services. A rosary will be led by his great nephew Randy Melancon at 7 pm on Thursday evening. David Guidry, III will honor his father by playing taps.
The family wishes to thank Vee Guidry, Robin Sonnier, Judith Goodstone, Kathy Guidry, Leah "the nurse" Guidry, Eula Mae Usie and Lloyd Aucoin, Jr., for going beyond the call of duty, and for the love, care, devotion and compassion shown to David. They treated David like he was their own father. God has truly blessed us with all of you. And also special thanks to the angels sent to us from St. Joseph Hospice, for the wonderful care, comfort and dignity you provided to our dad and to us. We don't know what we would have done without the help of Rene Dixon, Paxton Lloyd, Mrs. Byrd, Marina Norris, Pat Lejeune, Sarah Winchell, and a very special person Sheryl Polite. We are very blessed indeed.
