Geraldine "Gerry" Meche Himel

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Genevieve Catholic Church for Geraldine “Gerry” Meche Himel, 84, who passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023. Father Bryan Taylor, Pastor at St. Genevieve Catholic Church, will officiate the ceremony.  Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery immediately following the service.

Visitation hours will be observed at Walters Funeral Home on Thursday, April 13, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., and will resume on  Friday, April 14, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.  A rosary will be prayed on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Walters Funeral Home.

Gerry is survived by her husband of 54 years, Glenn J. Himel;  one daughter, Cheryl Lavergne Campbell of Bloomington, IL;  two sons, Wayne Lavergne and his wife Linda of Lafayette,  and Gregory J. Himel of Lafayette;  one sister, Jennelle Meche of Grand Coteau;  two brothers, Ronald Meche and his wife Viola of Sunset,  and Russell Meche of Grand Coteau;  four grandchildren, Amanda Dawson and her husband Tanner, Brittany Coulon and her husband Christian, Amy Tyszkowski, and Steven Lavergne;  and six great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Evelyn Meche;  and two brothers, Jimmie Meche and Curtis Meche.

Gerry is a 1955 graduate of Sunset High School, where she was on the Women’s Basketball Team and was named Homecoming Queen.  She was a professional cake decorator, and taught for Wilton Cake Decorating.  Living in Lafayette for 54 years, she was a long-time Parishioner of St. Genevieve Catholic Church, and was the Co-Owner of Himel’s Air Conditioning and Heating Inc. 

In her free time she enjoyed baking cakes, playing Pokeno with friends, and she loved watching her husband play live piano performances.  Gerry was very caring, and was always there for family members in need.

Pallbearers will be Greg Himel, Wayne Lavergne, Steven Lavergne, Ronald Meche, Dwayne Melancon, and Brian Melancon.  Honorary pallbearers are Russell Meche and Randy Melancon.
