Verna Barrilleaux
July 8, 1923 — July 15, 2017
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for Verna Benton Barrilleaux, 94, who passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2017. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery immediately following the funeral mass.
Verna is survived by two sons, Melvin Barrilleaux and his wife Connie of Lafayette, and Tom Barrilleaux and his wife Katie of Lafayette; five grandchildren, Kerrie Skerrett and her husband Denny, Greg Barrilleaux and his wife Angie, Scott Barrilleaux and his wife Asahel, Thomas Barrilleaux and his wife Mandy, and Allison Hebert and her husband Kelly; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death her husband, Melvin Joseph Barrilleaux, Sr.; her parents, Carmen and Overton Benton; one brother, Willie Benton; three sisters, Myrtis Landry, Mildred Landry, and Rena Breaux.
Verna was a member of the Soundwaves, a well-known Lafayette group playing big band music.
Pallbearers are Tommy Barrilleaux, Scott Barrilleaux, Greg Barrilleaux, Denny Skerrett, Kelly Hebert, and George Jacques.
Visitation hours will be observed at Walters Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association (910 Pierremont Road, Suite 410, Shreveport, LA, 71106), and Hospice Compassus (1438 South College Road, Lafayette, LA, 70503).
